Indulge in culture
Enjoy culture with all your senses in Fiskars Village: the eye-pleasing scenery and the deep hues of a ceramic vase, the scent of an oak table or the taste of a lovely dinner are all part of the experience. The human touch is visible everywhere in the village: the buildings, the workshops, and the exhibitions, as well as in well-tended parks and gardens.
Over time, the surroundings have been altered by both industry and village residents. The buildings mostly date from the 19th and 20th centuries, carrying the history of not only the locality but also Finnish industry at large. Eminent architects such as Engel, Wiik and Aspelin have influenced the appearance of the village. For more information on the buildings, visit the Architecture section of this site.
Nowadays, the historic buildings house workshops for people who influence what our environment looks and feels like today: designers, artisans and artists. Fiskars Village is a unique hub of arts and crafts. Here, creativity and handicrafts are an inherent part of both everyday life and celebrations. The professionals of Fiskars Village belong to the Cooperative of Artisans, Designers and Artists in Fiskars, which arranges high-quality exhibitions throughout the year. The first exhibition was organized in 1994, when the artisans and artists living in the village wanted to showcase their excellence. Today, the cooperative has more than a hundred members. Bringing art and crafts together was a new idea in the early 1990s, and it became a recurring theme for the exhibitions. The themes vary every year, with the teams and participants selected specially for each exhibition from among cooperative members as well as other Finnish and international creative professionals.
But in Fiskars, creativity is not limited to professionals: every visitor can try their hand at such skills as blacksmithing or glass-blowing, seeing for themselves how raw materials are turned into a poker or a glass bird, feeling the heat and listening to the sound of the hammer.
Various events and celebrations are also an important part of the life in the village – as always.
