Fiskars Village Art & Design Biennale – Parallel programme summer 2019

The diverse programme of Fiskars Village Art & Design Biennale 2019 will present events organised by local artists, designers and galleries. Invited through an open call process, the parallel programme highlights include children’s events, roundtable discussions, a piano recital, the baking of traditional thin breads and a series of open studios and talks with the local creatives.

The Onoma Cooperative of Artists, Designers and Artisans produces a series of live music events matching the industrial theme of the Factory exhibition. Tehtaan Klubi (Factory Club) nights will occur once a month during the summer months of the Biennale. The Ägräs Distillery Tap Room by the old knife factory will offer the perfect location for these evenings of experimental music and bold performances.

The cutting edge artists in this series represent a contemporary take on today’s Finnish club scene: Acid Kings, Pintandwefall, Slag Brick Project, Jimi Tenor & Jori Hulkkonen, and Radio Fiskars Orchestra & guests.

A gallery-like ensemble of hand-painted, wearable biker leather jackets from the 70s to the 90s. The exhibition breaks boundaries between art, clothes and recycled materials. 1–31 July: Super Fast Black Surf Boards and Super Slow Fashion

The exhibition will showcase WWOOLLFF CO.’s black surf boards as well as works combining graphic design, clothes and sustainability.

1–15 August: Vintage Workwear Turned Into Fashion Objects

Showcasing vintage reused workwear transformed into wearable fashion.

KIVESTÄ KORUKSI – EXHIBITION

The exhibition “Kivestä koruksi” demonstrates the journey of a raw stone into jewelry. Gemstones and jewelry manufactured by the master goldsmith Timo Mustajärvi will be showcased at the exhibition.

Mustajärvi’s jewelry and design philosophy reflects bravery, self-confidence and statuesqueness. Sculpture is the most important vanguard for the maker – the unique pieces of jewelry communicate a strong and clear design language.

The multidisciplinary exhibition Akten and the perfomative workshops of the Fiskars-based photographer Taru Samola and artist Tanja Is from Ekenäs explore the limits of humanity and conventionalism. What actions and desires do we allow in ourselves and others?

In her work Taru Samola focuses on the experience of otherness and on the feelings of anger, shame and externality caused by it. Tanja Is’s work considers food and sexuality and their interface.

The exhibition will be on display between the 1st and 30th of June 2019 at the Ägräs Distillery.

TEE / KATTAUS – EXHIBITION

The Tee / Kattaus exhibition presents the ceramics of Risto Paatero. The exhibition is about handmade ceramics, especially teapots and table settings, for everyday life as well as for special occasions. The unique thrown teapots and tableware designed by Paatero are made of porcelain and stoneware.

The exhibition aims to offer an experience, to tell and to share information about the materials used by a ceramist and his working methods as well as to offer new inspiration for the use of ceramics in table settings. The exhibition highlights sustainability and the use of natural materials. Paatero’s work can be bought at the exhibition at his ceramics shop, where you can find usable ceramics as well as unique pieces.

KWUM is a new private museum. The building was designed by the architect Tuomo Siitonen and constructed by ceramist Karin Widnäs. The museum is Widnäs’ statement of the state and future of Finnish ceramics.

Origins is an evolving collection of unique furniture and objects by Lasse Kinnunen. DEKA STUDIO CRAFT FUTURES: AN EXPLORATION OF CRAFT LIVELIHOODS

Craft Futures explores local Fiskars Village craft livelihoods. Based on Nora’s PhD research conducted in the village, this panel discussion aims to give insight into the working lives of the local craftspeople. Nora will present the key findings of her research, and following the presentation she will be accompanied by a panel of local craftspeople who will share in a discussion of their experiences of working in a contemporary artisan milieu. As a redirective designer Nora engages in research and practice to champion local production, and advocates for craft futures as a re-imagining of a culture that is centred on craft as a sustainable mode of production and the basis for sustainable ways of living.

PIANO RECITAL BY NEO KINNUNEN-IVANOVIC

Young budding composer and pianist Neo Kinnunen-Ivanovic will perform a selection of piano music that pays homage to his favourite classical composers. Featuring his own Piano Sonata No. 1, the recital will also include works by Chopin and Mozart. Neo was enchanted by classical piano recitals at an early age, so he particularly welcomes children to his concert to inspire their fascination with the beautiful world of classical music.
