Willem Heeffer is a Dutch designer based in Helsinki. He is active in the joint fields of
interior design, product design and architecture.
Willem Heeffer’s research project The City as a Mine explores potential uses for various
residue from factories in the Helsinki region. The idea is to harvest waste before it is
brought to landfill or further recycled. The project results in a series of interior objects,
while building an inventory of the city’s surplus materials. Its outcomes are both
economically, socially and environmentally beneficial.
In the time of mass consumption and short product lifespan, The City as a Mine is
committed to introducing more meaning to materials and objects. By telling the story of
how things get made, it aims to establish a stronger connection between them and their
owners as well as the ecosystem at large, thus also lengthening their lives.
